Dog-friendly wineries and cellar doors
A growing number of Hunter Valley cellar doors welcome dogs. A few worth building into your itinerary:
- VAMP by Lisa McGuigan — about 8 minutes from Flamingo House. Dogs are welcome inside and in the outdoor space under the gum trees; you’ll likely meet Maggie, the cellar door’s resident border collie.
- Gartelmann Wines, Lovedale — a relaxed cellar door where dogs are welcome to join you while you taste.
- Tintilla Estate — dogs are welcome at the outdoor tables and in a semi-enclosed area when the weather turns.
- Pepper Tree Wines — pets are welcome throughout the cellar door, inside and out, with pet treats on hand.
- Brokenwood Wines — about 10 minutes from Flamingo House and reported as dog friendly, though we’d recommend confirming current pet policy when you book.
Pet policies vary by winery and can change, so it’s worth mentioning your dog when you book a tasting.
Off-leash parks in Cessnock
Cessnock City Council maintains two off-leash exercise areas in town, both a short drive from Flamingo House:
- Hall Park — a council-designated off-leash area, reachable from Chidgey Street or Stephen Street.
- Manning Park — a larger, recently fenced off-leash area east of Allandale Road.
Dogs must be under effective control and owners are responsible for cleaning up after them. Council is also planning a third off-leash area at Bridges Hill, Cessnock.
Dog-friendly cafes and lunch spots
- Café Enzo, Peppers Creek Village — dogs are welcome in the outdoor courtyard, about 12 minutes from Flamingo House.
- Bistro Molines — dogs are welcome on the outdoor terrace, about 11 minutes from Flamingo House.
- Muse Kitchen at Keith Tulloch Wines — dogs are welcome at the outdoor tables overlooking the vines, about 10 minutes from Flamingo House.
A quiet walk: Kitchener Dam
About 5km south of Cessnock, Kitchener Dam is a favourite with local dog owners. A 1.2km loop circles the dam itself (home to ducks and swans), with a longer trail through the surrounding bushland if you’re after more of a stretch. Dogs should stay on a leash here.
A few things to keep in mind
- Flamingo House welcomes up to two well-behaved dogs, with a fully fenced yard, dog bowls and toys provided.
- Always check a venue’s current pet policy before you visit — Hunter Valley wineries and cafes update their rules from time to time.
- Pick up after your dog, in the yard at Flamingo House and everywhere you go.

“Accommodation exactly as described with additional surprises like condiments, plastic wrap and everything we needed. We had a dog with us and she loved running around the garden. The host was thoughtful with dog bowls and toys. Many vineyards nearby and some are also dog friendly.”
“Everything you need and more! Flamingo House is a beautifully renovated cottage. It has a wonderful large backyard which was very secure for our Cavalier King Charles. The pantry is generously stocked and the kitchen is fully equipped. There is also a lovely covered outside deck for eating or just relaxing.”
“Mark’s home was gorgeous and very homely and comfortable. Thought has gone into providing everything you could need — there was never a time where we thought ‘I wish we had this or that’. Our dogs loved the backyard; we’ve never seen our senior 13yr-old dog being so mobile outside.”
“A perfect dog friendly space for our family to spend Easter.”
